In this episode I chat with author Clodagh Finn and Deirdre Waldron about the incredible life of Cork woman, Mary Elmes who passed away in 2002 at 92 years of age.
Clodagh is the author of "A time to risk all" and she tells us about Mary's unthinkable bravery as she rescued 432 children from prison camps during the Spanish Civil War and World War 2.
Mary, who has recently been honoured in Cork with a new bridge in her name was educated in Trinity College and then the London School of Economics. She volunteered to work in hospitals in Spain and France, which led her on a path that had her caring for children in camps and rescuing many. She was held in a Nazi prison for 6 months in 1943 and returned to work after she was released.
